The transition into secondary school with your child is an exciting but also daunting time - new uniforms, teachers, and friendships. It's natural to feel a mix of excitement and concern. The experience can feel overwhelming. As a teacher, school leader and fellow parent, I am here to support you in navigating this transformative phase with confidence. I've crafted a three-session online course specifically tailored for parents like yourself, providing insider knowledge to empower you as a positive and informed partner in your child's secondary school experience. In our first session, we'll delve into the fundamental differences between primary and secondary school. You'll gain insights into the jargon, meet the professionals involved, and unravel the typical journey your child will undertake in secondary school. This session is a comprehensive introduction, featuring tips from various school staff, including subject teachers, receptionists, pastoral leaders, headteachers and even insights from former students. Moving into the second session, we'll shift focus to building strong relationships with schools and teachers. Drawing on my experience as a teacher, I'll share effective strategies (and pitfalls to avoid) when engaging with the professionals who play a crucial role in your child's education. We'll explore why some parents excel as partners and discuss how you can too. Our final session is dedicated to addressing potential concerns you may have. We'll navigate scenarios that might be causing apprehension and examine the various routes and methods available to resolve these issues. Much like creating a 'birth plan' during NCT, we'll craft a similar strategy tailored to secondary school challenges. The session will conclude with a general Q&A, providing an opportunity for you to seek clarity on any lingering questions.
