If you're in the process of applying for primary schools (like I am šāāļø), youāre probably visiting lots of local schools. These visits are such a great way to get a āfeelā for the school ā often, that feeling reflects how well the schoolās approach aligns with your own educational values. š”Ā Ā
Of course, schools want to show you their best bits during these events. š«āØ Itās a bit like having friends over for dinnerĀ ā you probably wouldnāt just pull a random microwave meal from the freezer š½ļø Schools will highlight what theyāre most proud of and thatās perfectly normal.Ā Ā
But hereās the secret: asking the right questions can give you a clearer picture of what the school is really like day-to-day. šĀ Ā

As a teacher and school leader, Iāve noticed many parents focus on āpoliciesā ā Whatās the behaviour policy? SEN policy? Attendance policy? šĀ Ā
While these are important (and often on the school website š»), what you REALLY want to know is how those policies translate into action on a typical day.Ā Ā
Here are some specific questions you could ask to uncover the day-to-day reality:Ā Ā
ā”ļø What happens if I have a family emergency during term time and my child will miss three days of school?Ā Ā
ā”ļø What happens if a child throws a pen across the classroom? āļøĀ Ā
ā”ļø What happens if a child falls over during lunchtime and cuts their knee? š¤Ā Ā
ā”ļø What happens if a child is struggling to improve their reading skills? šĀ Ā
ā”ļø What happens if a child is upset because of something another child said? š¢Ā Ā
ā”ļø What happens if a child doesnāt eat the lunch provided? š“Ā Ā
These questions can give you real insight into how the school operates ā beyond just policies.Ā Ā
